For those who have been in the South Orange Rotary for a long time, the news of the passing of Harriet C. Connolly is particularly sad. When I first joined the So. Orange Rotary Club, Harriet was known as a former Rotary Ann who joined Rotary when women were allowed to be admitted. She was a dignified gentlewoman who was an inspiration for this writer.

Harriet was a graduate of Columbia High School and after graduation (and a term as captain of the fencing team) from NYU, Harriet took a teaching position at Maplewood Junior High School. After World War II Harriet married her longtime sweetheart, Capt. Raymond Herbert Connolly.

Harriet was active as a volunteer in church, school and village organizations far too numerous to list in the Star Ledger, but we will remember that she served in the Rotary Club of South Orange. She was president of the board of the South Orange Library for more than 25 years. She was also active in village politics, including a run for village trustee.

Harriet was honored in1990 as "Woman of the Year" by the South Orange Chamber of Commerce.

Harriet wa the mother of 4 and the grandmother of 25.

Harriet passed away on October 5, 2010. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for 9:30 am on Saturday, October 30 at Our Lady of Sorrows
